Students Protection Plan 2018-19
The Student Protection Plan (which can be found here) sets out what measures we have in place to protect you, as a student at the Institute, should a risk to the continuation of your studies arise and details how we would communicate with you about this.
Students Contract - Terms and Conditions of Study
The terms and conditions for studying at the Markfield Institute can be found at the following links:
Fees and Funding
The tuition fees from September 2018 for UK and EU full-time students will be £5,000/year for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate Masters level courses. The tuition fees for overseas full-time students for undergraduate courses will be £6,500/year and £8,000/year for postgraduate Masters level courses.
What's included? The fee includes registration, tuition, examination/assessment marking and graduation. It excludes: study materials, re-examination (re-takes), residential accommodation, meals, travel, graduation robes and photographs.
Extra Costs you may incur whilst studying at MIHE
There are a number of costs you should budget for apart from the obvious cost of tuition fees. You may want to purchase some books relevant to your course which could be costly. You could of course search websites such as Amazon for second hand copies which usually work out a lot cheaper. Occasionally your Module Tutor may organise a field trip and you would have to bear the cost of that.
If you need to photocopy or print anything, you can do this in the library at a cost of 5p per page. Cards for photocopying can be purchased from the machine in the library at £1 a card. Library fines will be incurred if you keep the books longer than the return due date. Standard loan books which are overdue will be charged at 15p a day and short term book loans at 30p per day.
Should you ever need to re-take a module after having failed at the third attempt (and we hope you won’t) you will have to pay £450 to re-take a 15 credit module and £850 to re-take a 30 credit module. Any Masters student who is granted exemption from certain modules because of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be charged at £100 for a 15 credit module and £200 for a 30 credit module.
The Institute does not provide accommodation directly. Limited accommodation facilities are provided on the campus by the Markfield Conference Centre. You will need to contact the Markfield Conference Centre directly (contact the Centre Coordinator on 01530 244944, ext 211) to make arrangements if you wish to stay on the campus. The Markfield Conference Centre charges £180 a month including water, gas and electricity for students' accommodation. There are some limited en suite rooms available at £240 a month. If you just want to stay one or two nights every now and then, the cost will be £15 per night or £20 for an en suite room. If you rent property in Leicester you will pay considerably more and will also have to allow for all utility bills and travel costs.
How much you spend on food is really up to the individual but as an approximate guide you should allow between £30 and £40 a week. (Of course if you eat out or order in takeaway this amount will increase). In Markfield village, about a mile from MIHE you will find a co-operative store, a post office, a chemist, two hairdressers and various other small shops. There is also a fish and chip shop and an Indian takeaway. For halal meat supplies you will have to go into Leicester where there are plenty of halal butchers particularly in the Highfields area.
MIHE is a small friendly institute and tutors hold an open door policy which means you can pop in at any time the tutors a free and have a chat about anything you need to. The admin office is open from 9.00am till 5.00pm and staff there will be able to direct you to the right place or person depending on your needs. Any student requiring emotional support/pastoral care can approach either Dr Ataullah Siddiqui or Mary Barber or in fact anyone else with whom you feel comfortable able to talk to on a confidential level.
There is a Doctor’s surgery in the village and if you are staying on campus full time it is important that you register at the Medical Centre. Their details are as follows:
Markfield Medical Centre
24 Chitterman Way
Telephone: 01530 249461 (enquiries); 01530 242313 (appointments)
Things to Do in the Local Area
