The module aims to explore the concepts of state and citizenship in the West and their impact on Muslims’ self-identity. It examines the challenges posed by modernity and secularism on Muslims' thought and various Muslim responses. It analyses the contemporary Muslim discourse of identity, with special reference to Muslims living in majority Muslim countries as well as minority in different parts of the world with special reference to Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan Turkey and Europe.
